Founder + Lead Designer
I’ll be the first to admit that my interior design journey has not been a perfectly straight path, but I believe that the deviations in my professional life gives me a unique perspective to provide you with a special quality of service and eye for design you can expect from Oliver James Interiors.
My introduction into the world of interior design and real estate began at five years old when my parent’s idea of family fun was spending our weekends in design showrooms and open houses. I didn’t know it yet, but this was going to blossom into a full-fledged passion for both of these industries through the years. For practicality sake, and without a clear vision of a career path, I earned my Bachelor’s degree in Marketing at George Mason University in Virginia in 2011. I never considered interior design as a career path at the time so I kept it as a hobby by designing my college rooms for fun. Early in my career, I found myself exploring different industries from wedding planning in Washington D.C., and property management for Class A commercial real estate for several years. I spent my most recent five years at BHLDN, the Anthropologie sister bridal brand, as a senior stylist and manager helping brides find the most important attire they will likely ever wear.
I absolutely loved listening to my bride’s desires about how they wanted to look and feel on their wedding day and used my styling expertise to make their vision come to life, something that I can continue to deliver to my clients when designing their homes. During those five years at BHLDN, I continued to immerse myself deeper into the interior design world and began using my own home as a laboratory for my ideas. As I began sharing my work, I started to receive positive feedback and pleas for design help! Deep down, I knew this is what I wanted to focus my life’s work on, but I was too scared to make the leap and didn’t even know where to begin. After two serendipitous moments, fate (or life) was telling me to turn this dream into a reality. While pregnant with my second baby, I began my formal education in interior design and graduated with an additional award for excellence. I took the national exam and scored a 95%, and proceeded to get certified in 3D modeling.
One of my favorite mantras to live life by is quoted from Mellody Hobson where she said
“...but I am convinced, the biggest risk of all is not taking one."
I decided it was time to establish Oliver James Interiors.
